The seminar will introduce the main concepts of Information Retrieval and Recommender Systems. Since the beginning of the Web, search engines have been essential to locate any type of information. During this lecture we will explore the basic components of a search engine, identify the main challenges and present some well-established solutions. More recently, recommender systems have greatly increased their usage in e-commerce as another type of Information Retrieval system. We will study the problem they tackle and the main state-of-the-art solutions.
